Sony AI researchers have built a table tennis robot called Ace that can track a fast-moving ball and hit it back. The team published their work in Nature, describing how the robot uses two key technologies: a special type of camera that works differently from most cameras, and a learning system that figures out how to play without being given the rules of physics.
How the Robot Sees
Ace uses a camera sensor that works like your eye tracks movement. Regular cameras take still pictures many times a second, like film frames. This new type of sensor works differently—it only sends information when something changes brightness on the screen. When a ball zooms across the table, the sensor detects motion but ignores everything staying still.
Think of it like a security system that only alerts you when motion happens, rather than recording every moment. This approach is faster and uses less power than regular cameras. It also gets rid of blur that often occurs when filming fast-moving objects.
The robot processes information about where the ball is and where it's moving every 32 milliseconds, or about 30 times per second. A table tennis ball can travel faster than 60 miles per hour during a rally, so this timing is tight but workable.
How the Robot Learns to Play
Instead of programming Ace with the physics of how a ball bounces or how the arm should move, the researchers used a learning system called reinforcement learning. The robot learns by practice—they showed it thousands of rallies, and it gradually figured out how to hit the ball back by trial and error.
